Did you know that Tilghman Island has Water Trails?
The best are visible right from our boat docks.

Here for Other Kayaking Options

Life Jackets Must Be Worn At All Times

When it comes to kayaking, Tilghman Island Marina has some of the best options available anywhere on the Eastern Shore. Select from Kayak Rentals or Kayak Group Excursions or Corporate Kayaking. See each for details.

For 2 or 4 hour Kayak Renters there are 10 local paddling routes mapped out by Maryland's Department of Natural Resources. The best trail is visible from our boat docks, allowing kayakers to see exactly where they are headed by comparing to the trail map. Once launched from our floating dock-ramps, the saltmarsh trails are just paddle strokes away. With its stunning wildlife, sandy beaches and meandering channels (too shallow for powerboats), novice kayakers will feel safe. So pack a lunch and bathing suit for a few leisurely hours of paddling, swimming and relaxing on the sheltered waters of Back Creek Water Trails.

The more adventurous Kayak Renters with at least 4 hours available can circumnavigate Tilghman Island skirting the shores of the Choptank River and Chesapeake Bay in search of seaglass and driftwood. They can enjoy a picnic lunch on a sandy beach, swim Bay waters, explore Blackwalnut Cove and tour Dogwood Harbor which is home-port to several historic Sailing Skipjacks.

Full day or longer term Kayak Rentals are also available for those who wish to have one at their location. We can deliver or you can pick up.

FYI - If you have never kayaked before do not worry; this is a very intuitive and docile sport. Each year we have dozens of first-time kayakers ranging in ages from toddlers to seniors. We provide instruction, trail waters are sheltered and we use ultra-stable & unsinkable Ocean Kayaks.

If you've never been aboard our custom built "SkiffToon" before, you are truly missing out on a wonderful slice of life. Running her on the Chesapeake Bay or upon our local rivers and creeks is truly a pleasure. Not only is she extremely comfortable with plush seating and flat deck, but also easy to handle, stable and extremely seaworthy. Her shallow draft enables access to places most other boats of similar size can only dream of. So bring your family, friends and lunch for a day of swimming, sunning, sightseeing and exploring in the comfort you deserve.

It is desirable to have at least some boating experience through operating outboard motor boats of similar size and horsepower. Over our many years of operation, we've had plenty of customers that have successfully enjoyed their time on the water after going through our "Rental Boat Orientation" process. Not only have they learned the basic boating skills necessary to safely boat in our area but they also learned to read charts. Although boating traffic in this area is minimal with lots of wide open spaces making it a perfect environment for beginners, you do need to have both experience with boats of similar size and your boating license to rent this boat.

Please Note: This boat is never used for fishing or crabbing.

Although we do have several entry level boats, you still need some experience and a boating license. Therefore, first get your boating license
Free Here via BoatUS and then make your boat rental reservation with us.

FYI - We are authorized by the state of Maryland to issue anyone born after July 1, 1972 a temporary Maryland Boating Safety Certificate. There is no charge for this service but you do need to have some boating experience.

Don't let your minimal boating experience stop
you from having fun; Captain Ron can certify you!

It would be a crime to visit Maryland's Eastern Shore without spending some time on the water; and what better way than to captain the boat yourself. Pack a cooler with your favorite soft drinks, lunch and snacks. Then go sightseeing, fishing, crabbing, swimming or exploring. There are literally hundreds of miles of natural shoreline with remote beaches just waiting for you. If you're looking to fish or crab, Captain Ron will share his knowledge of a few local hot spots. And by the way, all of our Fishing & Crabbing Boats come with a Chesapeake Bay Fishing/Crabbing Boat License which covers everyone onboard. That means you won't have to buy a license for each person. What a wonderful thing!

NOTE: Please call for WaveRunner rental statue this year.

Last year we did not rent them due to Covid19.

Some prefer the thrill of skipping across Chesapeake Bay waters at nearly 50mph while others enjoy exploring our local waterways with unfettered freedom. Either way your WaveRunner adventure will provide awesome memories for many years to come. So pack a towel, lunch, camera and smiles; we'll supply the rest.

So what is the difference between a WaveRunner and Jet-Ski? This is one of the most commonly asked questions we get each year. Without getting too deep into the history, suffice it to say that in today's world most folks use these names synonymously. However back in the early 1970's the name Jet Ski was branded by Kawasaki (a stand up model) and years later Yamaha coined the name WaveRunner. Another brand name that is also commonly confused is Seadoo, manufactured by Bombardier. And by the way, all of these units are called PWC which stands for Personal Water Craft. So now you too are an expert!

FYI - Maryland state law requires all PWC operators be at least 16 years of age however passengers can be as young as 4 provided they weigh at least 50 pounds. Additionally, Maryland's Department of Natural Resources (DNR) requires that all PWC operators be certified. Certification is provided free of charge with your rental as long as you fulfill the requirements. Therefore, all operators will watch a short safety video, read a few pages of safety information, participate in an orientation and pass a short safety quiz. The process is very easy and for the benefit of all.

NOTE: Please call for WaveRunner rental statue this year.

Last year we did not rent them due to Covid19.

Who cares if it's cold? Early spring and late

Just across from the marina is the entry to Back Creek Water Trails; a perfect place to soothe your soul while immersed in Mother Nature's hospitality. The creek rambles on for a little more than 2 miles inland, with a number of side coves just waiting for exploration. The creek is too shallow for craft other than kayaks, canoes or stand-up paddle boards. As such, most of the wildlife native to this area are readily visible while in their natural habitat. Bald Eagles, Osprey, Blue Heron, hawks, egrets, swans, geese, ducks, deer, fox and beaver are just a few of the critters spotted on any given day. So be sure to pack your camera and lunch for a little quiet time with Mother Nature and her friends.

During summer months, most folks who wish to take along "Man's Best Friend" rent the canoe. Over the years we've seen as many as 3 medium sized dogs at one time onboard, though I would not recommend it. One of our most memorable times was watching "Man's Best Friend" jump from one side to the other causing the canoe to tip over resulting in a family swim. So if this is the plan, be sure to waterproof everything you treasure.

FYI - Although the canoe is available all year long, it is most appropriate for early spring or late fall when the water is much colder. Most folks start out by wanting to rent the canoe but then change their mind once they realize that canoes are way tipsier than our Ocean Kayak Malibu II's.

The Chesapeake Bay offers some of the most challenging small boat sailing environments you'll ever face. Large sailboats can safely take advantage of the invigorating winds and seas; however most days are way too aggressive for anyone short of an Olympic Class Sailor when on a small sailboat like our 13' Flying Junior.

On days that are calm enough for most to enjoy a safe Bay sail on a sailing dink, there is still the issue of knowing how to sail in slack winds with Bay currents and large yacht waves causing winds to dump from sails. And of course just because the day starts out pristine means nothing because conditions can change quickly, with no advance notice. As such our Flying Junior sailing dinghy is used strictly for offsite rentals. In other words, she is trailed away for customer use at a more suitable location, typically very sheltered inland waters.

Folks with access to waterfront properties are those that most commonly rent her. Even if the property does not have a boat ramp, she is lightweight enough for several fit folks to lift her off the trailer, rig and then carry to the water's edge. She can also be launched at any of the county boat ramps provided you have the sailing skills necessary to get back.

FYI - Your safety is our number one priority and we will never allow anyone to get in over their head. As such, only renters with significant sailing experience are qualified to rent our FJ. Please understand that this policy is in the best interest of all … you certainly don't want a sea-rescue story to tell.

Free road service should you have
a problem while biking on Tilghman Island.

Considering Tilghman is only 1 mile wide, 3 miles long and flat, a bike is a perfect way to explore our Island. Aside from the scenic views, there are several shops, restaurants and country stores to visit. We even have a unique Nautical Book Store which draws folks from far and wide. Your only decision is; do you want a basket and lock. We also have a few children's bikes.

You can also head off the Island onto the mainland to visit the little town of Sherwood which is only 3 miles up the road or for the more adventurous can go all the way to St. Michaels which is about 7 miles farther.

FYI - Maryland law requires all bicyclists under the age of 16 to wear a bicycle safety helmet when riding on public streets. This includes roadways, trails and sidewalks. They say that a bicycle helmet reduces the risk of serious head injury by 85 percent. As such, bicycle renters of all ages are strongly encouraged to wear helmets.

As a youngster growing up in the 60's I learned everything I currently know about catching, cooking and picking crabs from my grandfather. At least twice a month during the summer he would take me, my best friend and sisters out on his boat where we used hand-lines with oyster shells as weights and chicken necks for bait. A typical day's outing would provide that evening's dinner. There was nothing like catching crabs during the day so we could all sit around the table picking and eating crabs for several hours that evening ... we'll all remember those years forever. Memories like these are why crabbing is at the top of my list for family oriented, water related leisure time. Everyone plays a part in the activity and a fruitful day provides a feast for dinner.

Each Crabbing Gear Rental Kit contains 8 hand-lines, 1 Dip Net, 2 collapsible crab traps and a bucket or basket. For customers who also rent a boat, we'll discount your gear and share the locations of a few local hot spots that have proven fruitful.

FYI - It can be difficult to make sense of the state's crabbing rules and how they apply to your situation, so in order to simplify your boating day, we equip all rental fishing and crabbing boats with a Chesapeake Bay Fishing/Crabbing Boat License which covers everyone onboard.

Captain Ron has been known
to share a few of his favorite hot spots.

The Tilghman Island area offers some of the best fishing anywhere on the Chesapeake Bay. Species include Rockfish (aka Striped Bass), Bluefish, Perch, Flounder, Sea Trout (aka Weakfish), Croaker, Drum, Spot and Spanish Mackerel. Although Rockfish season opens mid-April and closes mid-December of every year, the best months for fishing from our rental boats are summer months, when most species are abundant, seas are typically calm and weather consistently good.

If you are visiting during summer months and just want to fish without care for the species, size or quantity, then a rental boat is perfect because a full day Charter Boat costs more than several days of a rental boat. On the other hand, you are just about guaranteed your Rock Fish limit throughout most of the season when fishing on one of the area's top Charter Boats.

So if you have decided against a Charter Fishing Boat trip but still want to fish, we have several rental options for you. If you are interested in fishing from a pier, beach or jetty then our Surf Fishing Gear is appropriate. However if you are fishing from a boat then our Boat Fishing Gear is best. Each setup comes with a fishing pole and tackle box that contains a variety of lures for cast & retrieve as well as bottom rigs for those who want to fish and relax. For customers who also rent a boat, we'll discount your gear and share the locations of a few local hot spots that have proven fruitful.

FYI - It can be difficult to make sense of the state's fishing rules and how they apply to your situation, so in order to simplify your boating day, we equip all rental fishing and crabbing boats with a Chesapeake Bay Fishing/Crabbing Boat License which covers everyone onboard.

When it comes to kayaking, Tilghman Island Marina has some of the best options available anywhere on the Eastern Shore. Select from Kayak Rentals or Kayak Group Excursions or Corporate Kayaking. See each for details.

For small groups of 4 to 6 people that are in good physical condition preferring to spend most of their day on the water, a Kayak Excursion is suggested. Choose from any of 3 Drop Point Destination options; Harbor Cove, Waterhole Cove or Blackwalnut Cove.

Excursions begin aboard one of our tour boats with kayaks in tow. Once we reach your chosen Drop Point Destination you'll be launched from a beach location to explore the pristine salt-flats, historic estates and farm lands that pepper the shoreline. Then at your own leisurely pace you'll enjoy a scenic paddle back to Tilghman Island Marina with random stops along the way for pictures, picnic lunch and swimming from one of the many remote sandy beaches.

FYI - Kayak Group Excursions require 4 to 6 people per group and advance reservations. Allow 5 to 7 hours for your outing. Due to the nature of the excursions, everyone must be in good physical condition in order to safely complete the 6 to 16 mile paddle.

When it comes to kayaking, Tilghman Island Marina has some of the best options available anywhere on the Eastern Shore. Select from Kayak Rentals or Kayak Group Excursions or Corporate Kayaking. See each for details.

For large groups of 10 or more which includes schools, scouts, corporate events, clubs, family picnics and team-building activities, we can host your gathering at our place providing access to most marina facilities or we can bring our kayak fleet to your waterfront location for a day or more.

Large groups kayaking from our location can also reserve usage of the Tilghman Island Marina's facilities which includes use of deck, picnic tables, BBQ grill and bathroom facilities with showers and changing area. Additionally, those not interested in kayaking can rent any of our other outdoor recreational equipment. I.e.,Canoes, Bikes, WaveRunners, Power Boats, etc.

For large groups wanting kayaks at their location, we'll pack our fleet up and bring it to you. We can then remain as your onsite safety monitor assisting kayakers with instruction, life jacket fittings, paddles, launching and retrieving or you can designate your own.

FYI - It is highly recommended that Kayak Group Coordinators contact us as far in advance as possible to ensure that our equipment is available on your date.

Tilghman Island is conveniently located on the Chesapeake Bay with many attractions just a short boat ride away. For example, just 2.5 miles northwest are the Poplar Islands, 5 miles further is Bloody Point Light House and 3 miles southwest of Tilghman Island's southern tip is Sharps Island Light House. Then there is the town of Oxford along the Tred Avon River which is only 10 miles east, not to mention Harris Creek and Broad Creek in between. All of these shorelines are peppered with mansions, estates, farm lands and natural salt-flats packed with wildlife that make for spectacular views. It would take days or even weeks to totally explore all of these sights; however several in the same general direction can be visited within the 3 hours allocated for our standard Waterway Tour. For those preferring to spend a little less time out on the water, we offer a Tilghman Island Circumnavigation Tour which takes about an hour. And if none of our preset tours blow your skirt up, then just let Captain Ron know your wants or needs and he'll make it happen.

FYI - Dogs are welcome. Please plan on arriving at Tilghman Island Marina at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled departure time.

It's a live

"Chesapeake Bay Sunset"

This area has a lot of choices when it comes to selecting an end of day celebration cruise. You really can't go wrong with any because just being out on the Chesapeake Bay to watch the sunset from a boat is awesome. And although we do not run Sunset Drifts every evening as sea conditions, clouds and weather must be just right; if we are planning a Drift and have room, you're more than welcome to come along.

We typically depart from the Tilghman Island Marina docks about 45 minutes prior to sunset and are generally back within 30 minutes of its passing. This typically results in being on the water for about 1.5 hours. As such, consider making dinner reservations at one of Tilghman's waterside restaurants about 30 minutes after to complete an evening you'll long remember. So bring drinks, snacks and friends for a personal party or just enjoy a little romantic time with your First-Mate before dinner.

FYI - We are limited to groups of 6; dogs are welcome. Plan on arriving at Tilghman Island Marina at least 30 minutes prior to boat's departure time.

The Tilghman area offers some of the best fishing anywhere on the Chesapeake Bay.

On the other hand, you are just about guaranteed your Rock Fish limit throughout most of the season when fishing on one of the area's top Charter Boats.

So if you'd prefer a Charter Boat then consider reserving a fishing day for Spring Trophy Season which is when the biggest fish are running; these are the ones that can weigh 30, 40 and even 50 pounds. Once Summer/Fall Fishing Season begins in June, the Rockfish are generally somewhat smaller however the catch limit does increase and there are a wider variety of species biting.

FYI - Regarding Head Boats: It is common to see those in places like Atlantic City, Cape May, Rehoboth Beach, Ocean City and most other places along the Atlantic Coast but there are none currently operating in this area. To fish aboard a Head Boat, you show up at the docks at least 30 minutes prior to departure, pay passage, then climb aboard and fish. The boat can be 100' or longer and is filled to capacity with strangers before departing the docks at their preset schedule; reservations are not usually necessary. On the other hand, with Charter Boats, you need advance reservations and the boat is typically filled with your fishing buddies.

If you are serious about nothing else in life,
please make boating safety
your one exception.

For those who grew up powerboating, operating one is as easy as driving a car. Even if it wasn't part of your childhood, experience can be gained through years of boating with family and friends. Just being a passenger makes learning to drive so much easier. For those without prior experience, gaining it can be difficult. Things like anchoring, docking, navigating and tie-up can all be overwhelming. The most obvious solution is to take a training class but unfortunately hands-on classes are difficult to find.

For folks interested in sailing, it's fairly easy to find sailing clubs or organizations that provide on-the-water sailing classes; however there are not nearly as many options for powerboat training. Of course the Power Squadrons, Coast Guard Auxiliary and a few others offer classroom instruction. Attending any of those is highly recommended as learning the academics is necessary, but then you'll still need the hands-on, which is where our Private Powerboat Operation Training can help.

So if learning how to handle an outboard motor boat, sterndrive or inboard is desired, then schedule a session with Captain Ron. You may even bring up to 5 others to participate in the training for a small upcharge. The 2 hour session may well be all the time needed if you have prior boating experience, are by yourself and just need some docking practice with coaching. On the other hand, if you have never driven before or are bringing several people to share the class, then the 4 hour session is best. Regardless of which is chosen, the majority of your training will be hands-on with you at the helm of a small outboard motor boat.
